The Beinhaus in Hallstatt Austria

The Beinhaus means bone house in German. It is a place where the bones of ancestors are stored. The one in the iconic village of Hallstatt is very special.

This age-old tradition is still common place in Austria and various villages and town have a Beinhaus.

The one in Hallstatt, is one of the most spectacular bone houses. Century old skulls amed and decorated can be seen here.

Just walk up the stairs to the Catholic Church to get to the Beinhaus in Hallstatt. There is a fee, which helps in the maintenance of the area.
