Late November is when Europe begins to glow with the first signs of Christmas magic. Streets sparkle, market stalls open, and the scent of mulled wine drifts through the air.
These nine cities capture that festive feeling before the December rush begins.

Why Visit Christmas Markets in November?
Most classic Christmas market destinations start out their Christmas markets right at the end of November, close to the last 2-3 days of the month, or in December.
Therefore, it's rather rare to find cities that kick off the holiday market season earlier, yet a shifting schedule in some particular regions has been picking up on the traveler trend.
The first Christmas markets open up with big fanfare by mid-November or around the 20th of November.

Novembers are less busy because Christmas markets are hopelessly overcrowded in December (which may devalue the experience).
Most flights to the area and accommodations are also much less inexpensive in November. This month has been known as off-season in all major tourist areas in Europe, but travelers can still have a fulfilling experience in the cities.
Locals love to hang out at the Christmas market in November, so you'll be surrounded by an authentic vibe.
Tip: The first day of the Christmas Market is always super busy in each city, but the remaining November days are much more chill. We love visiting Christmas markets in November!
Vienna (Austria)

Vienna is known for its splendid line-up of countless classic Christmas markets, and, fortunately, the grandest markets in Vienna start out by mid-November already.
In fact, Vienna hosts more than 17 major Christmas markets, and many are just a stone's throw away.

You'll guaranteed have fun Christmas market hopping, and no other city in the world can offer you this experience.
Vienna was one of the first cities to host Christmas markets in the world, but the traditional vibe alone will be a good reason to add Vienna to your Christmas market bucket list this season.

Munich (Germany)

Munich is probably one of the most fascinating Christmas market destinations that we have encountered.
Alone, the old-world feeling will enthrall your senses, but we were mostly amazed by the elaborate decorations and stall choices.
The classic market venues, such as the main old town market, start a bit later, on the 24th of November. But the residence market and airport market come alive much earlier, on the 17th and 14th in 2025.

The residence is the former palace, and the market takes place in the serene courtyard.
We were very surprised by the Christmas market at the airport, which has many unique gift and food stalls. We had so much fun here that we count this market as one of our favorite Christmas markets in Munich.

Zürich (Switzerland)

Zürich is all glitz and glamour during the Christmas market period, and you'll be able to soak in a palette of festive atmospheres.
The Swiss city is known for its elaborate, multicultural Christmas market feel, which beautifully comes together with the Swiss soul.
The result is quite impressive, and we made it a point to visit every single Christmas market.

At the top of the list, you will find the famed Christmas market at the main train station. This market is the largest covered Christmas market in the world, and it's most conveniently located.
Your next destination should be the Sechseläutenplatz. This location is modern, richly decorated, and probably the most popular Christmas market to meet people.
A major attraction, not to miss, is the singing tree. We were surprised to find a professional choir, in the shape of a Christmas tree, singing on the streets of Zürich!

Innsbruck (Austria)

Innsbruck is host to some of the best magical Christmas markets in central Europe.
One of the themes in the old town Christmas market is dedicated to the fairytale world, and every little alleyway retells the tale of mountain giants and Grimm Brother characters.

You'll get easily lost in the legends and find yourself marveling at the unique venue because Innsbruck is one of the few cities that is surrounded by tall mountain peaks.
I highly recommend visiting this city in November because sometimes, snowfall unexpectedly happens earlier, and Innsbruck is literally set in the Alps.

Rothenburg ob der Tauber (Germany)

Rothenburg ob der Tauber is one of the most mesmerizing medieval towns in Europe, and the walled city hosts a must-see Christmas market yearly, just that this year they are starting out earlier (yay!).
The town and the market are tourist hotspots—and therefore we highly recommend visiting this unique location in November, before anybody else does, because Rothenburg is drowning in overtourism.

Most tour groups visit the town in December, and the narrow paved city roads get super congested. November is much more chill, especially the earlier days, right when the market opens up.
While in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, don't forget to explore the walls of the town. They are open to the public and easily accessible. You can walk along the walls full circle.
Dates
Rothenburg ob der Tauber Reiterlesmarkt — 21st November to 23rd December 2025, Monday to Thursday 11 am to 7 pm, Friday to Sunday 11 am to 8 pm.
Rattenberg (Austria)

Rattenberg is a medieval town in the Austrian Alps, which is also known as the smallest city ever.
The town has honed its glassblowing skills since medieval times. You'll be able to purchase artisanal Christmas baubles at the annual Christmas market held in the old town.

In fact, you can watch the masters blow glass into Christmas baubles and other Christmas-themed items and shapes.
Rattenberg feels more like a trip back in time, and the Christmas market is much simpler but a trip worth it if you want to experience something else.
Dates
Rattenberg — 21st November to 21st December 2025, Friday to Sunday fixed program hours.
Salzburg (Austria)

Baroque and classical music are the core philosophies of Salzburg, and the Austrian city is a feast for the eyes during the Christmas period.
All the Christmas markets light up on the 20th of November, and 3 are located in the old town itself.
This includes the Dom and Residency Square market, the smaller Mirabell Palace Christmas market, and the market set above all else in the courtyard of the Hohensalzburg fortification.

Our all-time favorite Christmas market in Salzburg is located a bit outside the city at the Hellbrunn palace.
This particular market comes with an entry fee and a unique holiday impression. Families will love the petting zoo with small animals, the bonfires, the little children's train, and the chance to send a letter to Santa Claus via the Christmas post office.
Dates
Dom and Residency Square — 20th November to 1st January 2026, mostly between 10 am to 8:30 pm but check all the detailed opening hours.
Mirabell Palace — 20th November to 31st December 2025, weekdays 10 am to 8 pm, weekends 10 am to 9 pm, 24th December 10 am to 3 pm, 25th + 26th December 10 am to 6 pm, 27th to 31st 10 am to 7 pm.
Hellbrunn Palace — 20th November to 24th December 2025, Tuesday to Friday 1 pm to 8 pm, Saturday, Sunday, and Holidays 10 am to 8 pm. 23rd December 1 pm to 8 pm and 24th December 10 am to 2 pm. Closed on Mondays.
Fort Hohensalzburg — 21st November to 23rd December 2025, 11 am to 7 pm.
Kitzbühel

Kitzbühel is a small town, tucked away in the Austrian Alps between Innsbruck and Salzburg. This particular town is known as a retreat and hideout for the rich and famous and as one of the top ski resorts in the region.
As a result, you will encounter a unique Christmas market amidst the colorful town wall facades of the inner city.

Festive trumpets playing Silent Night and unique stalls with artisanal products from the region make this Christmas venue one of the top destinations if you are eager to explore beyond the bigger city markets.
The markets take place from Wednesday to Sunday only, but the first one is held on the 19th of November this year. You can combine a weekend trip to Kitzbühel with Rattenberg.
Dates
Kitzbühel — 19th November to 28th December 2025, Wednesday to Sunday with several set hours.
Bregenz (Austria)

Bregenz is situated next to Germany and Switzerland at the Bodensee lake. The city isn't that well known for its Christmas vibes yet, but you might want to look into this destination for numerous reasons.
The city market is inaugurated in mid-November. As a lake city, Bregenz is connected to the German town of Lindau by boat. Lindau and the boat host separate Christmas markets and events, but at a later date in November.

Therefore, you have the option to hop between Christmas markets in two cities and two countries. Each offers a different feel!
You should also know that Bregenz is just a short distance away from Zürich in Switzerland. You could plan a railroad or car trip between the cities to capture the Christmas spirit of this region in Europe.
Dates
Bregenz — 15th November to 23rd December 2025, daily 11 am to 9 pm.
