Most European cities are highly idealized outside of Europe, especially the romanticized big cities, which can feel quite sobering on a first visit.
We traveled to several cities, and some were more exciting than others. In fact, at times we felt underwhelmed for various reasons.

Keep in mind that an “underwhelming city” can mean multiple things to different people. It's very subjective.
What might seem monotonous to some, is another person' playground. Europe has so many stunning cities, that they all end up competing for visitors, and some of these cities fall short because the others have much more to offer.
So, for better or worse, here are 11 European cities that fall into this category.
Jump to:
Milan, Italy

Before we made our way to Milan, we were repeatedly told by numerous people on social media and by family and friends that the city wasn't worth a trip.
We went to Milan, nonetheless, but we lowered our expectations, and yes, the city can feel a bit dry.
Its most prominent sights are the cathedral with the square, the adjoining glass covered luxury mall, the Castello and Da Vinci's The Last Supper.
Who will like Milan? Fashion-conscious people. I'd travel to Milan in a heartbeat just to buy a tailored suit, and the food is top-notch. Milan is your entry city to travel to the lake Como towns and Bergamo.
Zürich, Switzerland

Zürich and Geneva are the biggest cities in Switzerland, and contrary to what everyone seems to believe, neither of the two cities is the capital of Switzerland (spoiler alert, it's Bern).
There isn't much to do in Zürich, the old town isn't as stimulating as other European cities, and it's an expensive city in general.
The natives seem distant and cold at times, which doesn't help the tourist image of Zürich.
Who will like Zürich? Make it your starting point when visiting Switzerland and visit scenic Swiss rural villages such as Appenzell.
Bratislava, Slovakia

Bratislava is blessed with a small, cute town, but it has its shortcomings. Especially if you compare it to other nearby famous cities.
There are more popular destinations in this corner of Europe that are overshadowing the Slovak capital.
This includes Vienna, Budapest and Prague, and they all have so much more to offer in comparison. People on the socials and our friends complained that they found it to be lackluster.
Who will like Bratislava? Bratislava is very laid back, and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit there. Mass tourism is non-existent in Bratislava.
Luxembourg City, Luxembourg

Luxembourg is a small, wealthy country in Western Europe, and it's one of the founding members of the EU.
The historical city has an interesting tale to tell, but we thought that the tourism body could do more to convey that information to visitors.
The capital city appears to be lifeless at times, and you will think twice if you want to pay a premium price to visit this country and city when you can prioritize other far more intriguing European destinations.
Who will like Luxembourg City? History fans will want to visit the Bock Casemates fortification walls, people come for shopping, and the city is also known for its Sin City nightlife.
Paris, France

Have you ever heard of the Paris syndrome? People have this perfect idea of what the city of love should be that they end up completely disappointed.
Truthfully, Paris is just like any other city, and visitors might find the sights and landmarks repetitive.
Who will like Paris? Fashion conscious people will enjoy a shopping trip in Paris, and museum fans will appreciate the great choice of museums.
Bucharest, Romania

Bucharest is Romania's capital, and while we thoroughly enjoyed our trip across rural Romania, we struggled to like Bucharest city.
In the old town, stripper dance bars seem to be the norm, and the historic old town is clouded by this constant party atmosphere.
The infrastructure is outdated, and green park spaces are not that well maintained. Bucharest felt a bit dystopian, although the city administration can easily improve it.
Who will like Bucharest? Fans of brutalist architecture will like Bucharest. We had a great time in the Bucharest Therme just outside the city. You can get cheap flights from London to Bucharest if you are looking to party.
Vaduz, Liechtenstein

Liechtenstein is a micronation in Europe, neighboring Switzerland and Austria. Its capital city is the size of a European village.
Vaduz is not only tiny, it's also a bit boring. You can spend a morning there, and you will be done.
Generally speaking, there isn't much to do in Liechtenstein because it's a mountain country, and it's small.
Who will like Vaduz? I'd probably only recommend visiting Liechtenstein if you are passing by. People who come to Vaduz do so because it's a Tax haven.
Munich, Germany

I have added Munich to this list because I have been lately reading traveler accounts, and people have been feeling unimpressed by Munich.
The city was heavily bombed during WWII and was rebuilt, so the original old town feeling isn't as fulfilling.
Most people visit to experience the Oktoberfest, the world's largest folk feast, which involves a lot of beer, or they come for the Munich Christmas market.
Who will like Munich? Turn Munich into your base and organize day trips from Munich, to the dazzling Neuschwanstein castle or the beautiful Königssee Lake.
Lille, France

Lille is France's northernmost town, and it's often completely overlooked because the region is widely recognized for other more interesting, worth-your-time destinations.
It's a pretty city in its own right, but it does lack exciting attractions. You can skip visiting Lille if you are looking for a more rounded destination experience.
Who will like Lille? The city is super casual, and you will feel at home here if you are trying to escape other touristy French cities.
Graz, Austria

Graz is a city in Styria, a region in Austria, and you can skip adding it to your bucket list if you are planning a trip across Austria.
Salzburg and Vienna are much more captivating destinations compared to Graz. Graz simply doesn't deliver in terms of landmarks and things to do.
Graz's main attraction is the clock tower.
Who will like Graz? If you are tired of Vienna and Salzburg, visit Graz. If you want to try remarkable regional Austrian food, go to Graz.
Ljubljana, Slovenia

Ljubljana is the quaint capital of Slovenia, a country bordering Austria (Don't confuse Slovenia with Slovakia).
It has its charm, but you might feel disappointed if you expected a grand city with countless activities.
It's most definitely not a city for everyone!
Who will like Ljubljana? Just like Bratislava, visit Ljubljana if you want to escape busy, popular cities. The town is cute, and you can make it your base for cool day trips.
