Winter in Europe feels extra special with sparkling lights, festive markets, and cozy city vibes.

These are the must-see cities that travelers are planning around this season for good reason.
Zürich (Switzerland)
Zürich truly comes to life in winter as people from all over the world head there, especially during the weeks before Christmas.

Christmas market hopping, luxury shopping, and hanging out in the top bars and lounges should all be on your to-do list when in Zürich.
I highly recommend a cheesy Raclette or Swiss cheese fondue evening in the Raclette Factory located in the charming old town.

It's the ultimate Swiss experience that you shouldn't miss out on when in Switzerland in winter.
Zürich has a top airport, and all the train routes in Europe stop at the iconic main railway station. Either way, you can easily add Zürich to your bucket list itinerary.
Vienna (Austria)

You can't travel to Europe in winter without including Vienna in your must-see destinations.
The city embodies classical music and the grand Belle Époque period, and it's still a vivid reminder of an empire long gone.

Vienna is known for the most fascinating choice of Christmas markets in Europe, and each one is worth exploring. Set at a palace, in the old town next to the gothic church, or in the old Viennese lanes, each is special in its own right.
Vienna is for you if you have come for the history, the museums, and the timeless Austrian soul.
You will find plenty of more affordable flights landing in Vienna, and the city is also well connected to other metros in Europe.
Prague (Czechia)

The capital of Bohemia, Prague is known for its gothic vibe that comes with eye-catching facade buildings and typical Czech period charm.
We make it a point to visit the city at least once a year in the winter months. It attracts us like a magnet!

Take a stroll through the quaint corners of the city, sip traditional Czech beer (which is one of the best in the world!), and marvel at some of the sights, such as the stunning astronomical clock.
This city is all yours if you are captivated by a darker side that Europe has to offer.
Add a day trip or two from Prague to your to-do to complete a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Czechia.
Budapest (Hungary)

Budapest is the grand capital of Hungary and a city that seems to be standing still in its bygone elegance.
We found Budapest to be a good budget option for central/eastern Europe, especially when compared to western Europe.
The city is split by the Danube River, with the Buda Castle Hill overlooking the Pest side.

Travel to Budapest if you seek the charm of a past era.
To learn about 19th-century Jewish culture at the Grand Synagogue, to experience the last art deco thermal spas, and to try a real Hungarian goulash soup.
Salzburg (Austria)

Salzburg might be a popular summer escape for most travelers, as it is known as the filming location for the legendary Sound of Music movie of the 60s.
Yet, the city flaunts its baroque beauty in the winter months, and I'll give you several reasons why you should add Salzburg to your winter city itinerary for 2026.

First and foremost, the city decoration will completely enchant you. Especially the Advent period will catch your imagination as you walk through the famed narrow Getreidegasse.
Second, you will find a very traditional Christmas market right in the old town and a modern, fascinating Christmas market, with a petting zoo and unique stalls, at the Hellbrunn Palace just outside town.
And thirdly, Salzburg makes for a great base to explore other stunning locations nearby, such as Hallstatt, Hitler's Eagle's Nest, or the Wolfgang Lake, which, by the way, hosts a stunning Christmas market as well.
Munich (Germany)

If you are looking for a bustling city with good international vibes, head to Munich in winter.
You definitely won't be disappointed because Munich is so much more than just Oktoberfest and beer.
The Christmas market is absolutely spectacular in December, and January and February will keep you busy with traditional activities such as the Cooper's Dance and the carnival celebrations. (All that Munich has to offer)

Besides, Munich is optimally located near other amazing towns and stunning locations in Bavaria.
Winter is also the best period to sample Bavarian food classics, as they're pure comfort foods. I recommend stopping at the legendary Hofbräuhaus for the ultimate Bavarian food and drink experience.
Basel (Switzerland)

Basel is a city in western Switzerland that tends to be overlooked in the winter months. Yet, Basel makes for a great base and destination in general due to its location.
Situated right at the border of France and Germany, Basel turns into an ultimate hub to other fascinating destinations.

This includes the Alsace region in France, with magical Colmar and other half-timbered fairytale towns nearby, and the Black Forest region in Germany, the home of the cuckoo clock and Black Forest cake.
When in Basel, visit a few of the most renowned museums, including the natural history museum and the art museum, and explore the lesser-known old town.
Innsbruck (Austria)
Innsbruck is the third must-see city if you find yourself in Austria. You should definitely add it to your winter travel Europe bucket list if you are traveling either between Zürich, Munich, Salzburg, or Vienna.
Known for the typical Tyrolean medieval architecture and alpine backdrop, it's a city that will give you the ultimate winter wonderland memory.
Some of the best ski resorts in Austria and Europe are just a stone's throw away from Innsbruck.

Crystals from Swarovski adorn the themed Christmas markets of Salzburg. Fairytales come to life in the old town in December with the iconic Christmas market.
Our insider tip for culture lovers: Traditional customs are held here throughout the winter, including Perchten celebrations, Krampus runs, and the Fasnach customs.
Milan (Italy)

Milan in winter has a special kind of charm that you won't find in the warmer months.
The streets feel calmer, the fashion shines brighter, and the festive lights make the city glow.
You can warm up with rich Italian coffee before heading into world-class museums or luxury shops. I think Milan is every gourmet food lover's holy must-visit travel grail.

Winter sales bring plenty of bargains, and the city's cozy restaurants are the perfect escape from the cold.
Evenings often feel magical as locals gather in stylish cafes and the city buzzes with seasonal events.
Amsterdam

Amsterdam, contrary to popular belief, is not just a spring destination for tulips and flower fields.
In fact, Amsterdam scores with its offerings all year round, but especially in winter when you finally get to enjoy the city without mass tourism.
Book a cozy trip on a canal cruise boat, visit iconic museums, and immerse yourself in the nightlife.
Amsterdam is a pretty safe city, and while it's not always budget-friendly, it has so many other perks.
For example, most Euro cities almost completely shut down on Christmas Day, which leaves tourists scrambling for entertainment and simple things such as food. Yet, in Amsterdam you won't have to deal with this problem (more about this in a separate post soon!).
